Trigboy - Time Talk And Falling Over

"Time talk and falling over" is the second (that Olrick can remember) release from the 'Futado' loving, beatsteak stalking, ambulance painting, traffic cone throwing ska'dilly punkers 'Trigboy' and I can bet a fair amount of money that it's not the last either.
After stealing four mp3s from their previous cd off their website and growing very attached to the 'I'm like a bird' cover, I cleverly (somehow) found myself (I know how) endlessly annoying the bassist and was soon offered *this* cd that I promised to review, which might I add - was even signed! How lucky am I? - Not as lucky as I was before 5pm on Friday, damn pockets!

Listening to the cd was no where near as exciting as receiving it - I'll never understand why that was. Before actually popping it into my cd player, I assumed that it would be pretty much the same as the stuff from their website, but no! Instead of the happy, light, simple, ska'd punk Nelly covers, the cd opened up an unfound (to me) attitude of almost hardcore punk with slightly aggressive, heavy lyrics and guitar riffs tonnes stronger than what I expected and yet, still managed to keep the ska side of their music noticeable; and I personally, think that's a good thing because this shows they're adapting their style as newer recordings are being done (thats a bit of a quote - sorry, I just re-arranged the words to make it sound like something I'd say).
I
noticed that a little way into the final track (excluding the oh-so secret one) "Big Blue Man" there's an obvious inspiration from the highly legendary Farse kings that made me laugh but managed to come out remarkably well - lord, it's not easy copying Ollie's crazy pwra's and fllrrah-cha-ta-plrah's! (I still can't roll my rr's if anyone cared.)
Favourite song? - 'Night of the cowboys' and 'nah nah song' (who would have thought that such a lame 'la la-la la la la' chorus would be so brain pollutingly catchy?!)
Final words: 'Rad'
Even finaller words: I love trigboy

Metallica - Kill 'em All

Ceska said that she would put a metal review on her site when I complained it's all ska punk and I would help if there was something for metal heads like me. So I'm writing this review of metallicas first album, Kill em all...

One of Chilled's many favourite cd's

Dont let the cheesy graphics fool you, this album is the shit!
This album seems a bit Motörheady. The first song Hit the lights starts with a crazy drum roll and a guitar bit that seems so motörhead like, but then it changes. The second song The four horsemen has one of the most stunning guitar solos ive ever heard! Even Fred liked it! Almost every song on this album has amzing guitar solos, except track 5, anaesthesia pulling teeth which is just a 2 and a half minute song with just bass. This album Just gets better and better as it goes on, track 6 whiplash is good, but track 7 Phantom lord is bloody excellent with its fast guitar and echoey lyrics. More sign of Motörhead, The next song is called No remorse! (a motörhead album). This song is great too, and has a blistering opening riff. One of Metallicas all time classics is on this album Seek and destroy, although its about fighting its damn good. Theres no screaming on this album, just fast thrashy guitar, hard drumming and a damn good sound.

No Half Measures - Mucky Puppet

I believe that this is the first self release from those all male, all punk, all loud  - No Half Measures. And if so, they've done a superb job and put a huge amount of effort into this cd; You can tell by the quality of the recording and art work; it also seems that the CD's been glass mastered (I could be wrong), which must have cost quite a bit!
Anyway, the cd opens up on a nice, crackly/bubbly sound followed by a few plucks of an electric guitar and is then blasted away by smashing cymbals and drums mixed with deep guitar riffs and strong bass pluckings, which could do with being a little tidier. When the vocals butt in, sweet Jesus they stand out! At first I thought perhaps this was just a piss take of someone who couldn't sing, but unfortunately I was quite wrong. Never the less, I continued giggling to myself and took a look at the lyrics. The band is seemingly focusing on political views, lifestyles and opinions of their own and therefore, there isnt really much need for them to concentrate on producing a beautiful front man voice; all that should matter to them is that they're getting heard and expressing themselves through the music that they play (hopefully!). What I find really clever is that because this voice is so noticeable, your ears fix on it and make you listen to every single word being said. However, theres one quotation in here that I'd like to pick out, which is " From one to three and another tattoo. Asking me questions like 'why are you true?' " I hate to be picky, but this makes me think they're working a little too hard on getting everything to rhyme. I mean, no ones ever asked me "why are you true?" but then people very rarely ask for my name either..
I imagine this band is very capable of pulling off an excellent live performance that'll send their crowd into a mental pit of lost shoes and aggressive bashings which are always great fun when you're not the shortest person there.
I've never been a great fan of the hardcore punk style, but this band has added it's own small spurts of ska riffs, unique voiced lyrics and catchy tunes to sing a long to which stop them from falling directly into that category.
Well done boys!
: )

The Unsuccessfuls - EP

Never heard of this band hailing from Reading before (not Kent!) until this ep came through my door. Putting on this CD was a great surprise as I didn't expect them to sound like a proper band... no offence!
The music is actually music - not just noise - and the songs seem perfectly timed. The tracks contain beaut-eye-ful saxaphone solos along with piano and ska guitar riffs. The guitar and the drums seem to join together to form one instrument while the bass and the piano fill the rest nicely.
Now the singing is totally different as it has a croaky feel to it but in no way does it sound forced or wrong, which I think produces a unique quality and is the final touch.

The CD opens with a very catchy 'Sweet Lies' which was in my head the whole time I was in Switzerland. It also has some pretty darn good sax and guitar solos which show off the talent of the band. Next up is 'Stand My Ground' which opens up with the bass and has the odd harmonica bit thrown in. This song is slightly slower but picks up speed in the chorus and is a laid back, relaxed song. Track 3,   *****, is a fast-paced-break-yur-neck-drop-a-brick-on-your-foot type tune which is probably amazing live and again has some 'mazin solos by the sax player and lead guitarist. Finishing the 4 track EP nicely is '  *****  ' It blends in nicely with the style of the rest of the CD with the Unsuccessfuls style ska riffs played in each song. This is by no means a bad thing and acts as the heartbeat to their music.

Overall this is a brilliant CD to relax and chill to and'll take you to the land-o-ska which lets you appreciate good music.

Flying Marrows - As The Marrows Fly

This is the second of two Battley' bouncy CD's from the Flying Marrows.
The art work and presentation of this cd is so exellent. You can always rely on the Marrows for fine looking releases. (and stickers!)
There are four songs in particular which I've had to have on repeat for quite a while, these being: "Literary Escape" which makes me laugh a lot as I've also had to somehow escape the torture yet to come from the school Libarians who know you're sneakily dropping off your over due books whilst you think no-ones looking.
The second most liked song is named "Captain Pugwash's Revenge". For some reason this song will always remind me of how I threw up off the side of a boat when I was on holiday. You can imagine all these funny little beard'd men dancing about with mops trying to clear up your puke as the boat bobs up and down. Nice use of "choockas" and "huhs" throughout.
Third song "Not even raining" is very effective and I think it stands out from all the other songs recorded onto this cd with it's not-so-chirpy lyrics and offbeats. The vocals fit in incredibly well with the bass line, which I like. So it's a nice emotional little tune to listen to when your hamster dies for example. (the song has nothing to do with hamsters by the way)
And onto the hightlight of the cd - "The chilling tale of Gab(riel)by von bassline". You all should have heard of the darling 'Ye Wiles' by now and this song happens to be about them. The cd finishes with this song and brings back those happy cravings for wanting to allow large amounts of spazms to take full control of the actions of your legs.
These Acoustical'd Sea-Weedeld Ska'd Spazmatic tunes are all available from Flying Marrow shows, Punker bunker (in Brighton) or their website.
Their cds are always a great listen and are an excellent way of getting rid of the sickness from those typical ska punk, hair ruining, shoe losing, arm bruising, bandanna mis-placing, camera dropping, crowd surfing, head hurting, ear ringing, clothes smoking bands which we have too many of these days.

Flying Marrows - As The Marrows Fly

The flying marrows are two 7ft ska brothers from Battle - Natty and Bill.
They're often found at the Holy Toilet - and I'm pretty sure this is how almost everyone in Tunbridge Wells knows of them.

My actual review:

There's quite a nice story behind this CD actually..
Friday 11th October, Grapeseed bandits, Morgan's Puff Adder and the Pie Taster's gig at the Forum.
Stood at the back near the merch shop for some reason..
A friendly man with glasses comes a long and asks if I like flying marrows, of course I reply with a "yes" and then get handed the most beautiful-looking green sticker!
This man just so happened to be Mr. Natty Marrow himself!
He then asks: "do you want to join our mailing list?" - "Yes, I do!"
I sign it with a red pen and a couple days later, I recieve pretty coloured e-mails.
Golfing on the moon... we meet again!
I get suprised with yet another beautiful sticker - A yellow one this time!
After discussing <this> web-site with him for a little while, I get asked if I'd like to review his cd... I think I said no - and explained that I can't do reviews.
Anyway... Monday morning (could have been Tuesday) I deliberately attempted to trip over my trousers' leg and fall down the stairs in hope to wake up both my brothers (to get attention).
At the bottom of these stairs I find many, many letters.. none of which were for me - except one! T'was addressed to "Franceska", and as Natty is the only person who's noticed the "ska" at the end of my name, I asumed it was from him - and it was!
Inside my jiffy bag, there lies my very own marrow'd cd - exciting!
I couldn't remember any of their songs from last time I saw them play, but as soon as "bass wouldn't start" (1st track) was played, I immediately recognised it.
No one agrees with me and it's really annoying - but I'm so sure that Bill has stolen Judge Dread's voice box, is it true?

The CD contains SEVEN acoustically ska'd songs. Some are happy - some are sad, but NONE of them hurt your ears, which is the cleverest thing anyone has ever managed to come up with. Even when watching them live, you don't need to wrench crap loads of cotton wool in your ears.
All songs carry varied amounts of skankable off beats, I don't want to have to repeat what has already been said, so I'll try and re-arrange the words and then direct you to the better version of this review. The music that you hear can't really be described as ska, it's the sort of music which you'd expect people to skank away to, but if like Phil - you're lucky enough to own yourself a flat, you'd use this as an oportunity to dance like a fool - or however your limbs move when you have no control over them.

My favourite tune would have to be captain pugwash BUT, as this isn't on Flown the roost, I choose bass wouldn't start, because it sounds like this:
Chaw naw, Chaw-naw-naw. Chaw naw, Chaw-naw-naw. Chaw naw, Chaw-naw-naw. Chaw... Chaw. <repeat X 2> Just do what it takes to get me...baw naw naw.. hommmmmmmmmmme. chaw chaw chaw chaw chaw chaw chaw chaw chaw (X 3).
Back to the beginning.
Oh no, he's not normal either!
Chicki chooch chooch, chicko chooch chooch, chicki chooch chooch, chooch-chooch-chooch Chaah.
Baw naw, baw-baw-naw etc...
here we go:
Paw naw, paw-naw-naw. Paw naw, paw-naw-naw. Paw naw, paw-naw-naw etc..
Tawng Tawng Tawng Tawng Tawng Tawng
oh no.... NEVER!
(it's the remix)

Over all, it really is a great cd - not just because it doesn't hurt my ears!
Each song brings out stupid
dances which you never knew you could do.
It's a style of music which you don't get to hear very often - probably because no-one round here has experimented with it enough yet.
The music escaped from such nice people.
There's a cute little marrow which can actually fly inside the front cover and no-one complains when you play the CD too loud.
Buy it!
